Diagnosis and Development of Proposals to Improve Urban Safety from a Feminist Perspective in Four Municipalities: Alella, La Seu d’Urgell, Sant Pere Pescador and Tortosa

This project was carried out as part of the implementation of the National Plan for the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence, with a pilot test in four municipalities in Catalonia: Alella, Tortosa, La Seu d’Urgell and Sant Pere Pescador. The objective was to equip municipalities with the capacity to identify architectural and urban elements that fail to incorporate a gender perspective and that directly affect women’s perception of safety, limiting their right to move freely in public space.

The project combined two lines of work. First, specific training was provided to municipal teams to help them identify urban conditions that generate inequalities and insecurity. Secondly, four exploratory walks were coordinated and conducted as preventive actions to address sexual violence, led by specialized professionals and adapted to the reality of each municipality.

The process resulted in a study that includes a theoretical framework on urban safety from a feminist perspective, the methodology used, and the analysis of the results obtained. The report shows how urban configuration shapes women’s perception of safety and provides recommendations for incorporating a feminist perspective into urban planning, with the aim of contributing to future transformations that improve the perception of (in)security in municipalities.
